WESH 2 News temporarily cut off their analog signal Wednesday at 7:59 p.m. to alert viewers if their current television signals are compatible with a digital one.

The test was in preparation for the permanent digital signal switch for television will take place February 17, 2009.

All televisions not equipped with cable and satellite will not pick up the signal and will need a converter box or need to switch over to cable or satellite providers.

The important factor for the switch is not the type and age of your TV, but the type of signal it receives.

Viewers saw a black screen if their TVs did not pass the advisory test, followed by a recommendation by WESH to switch signals before February.

Those who had TVs that passed saw a confirmation message by the station.

Even though cable and satellite providers can pick up the digital signal, some cable companies, such as Comcast, were not ready for the test and their customers' TV screens went black.

A Comcast representative said Comcast will be ready in November that it is still assessing, ordering and installing the equipment needed.

"We just wanted to show people where things stand today if the transition happened today," WESH 2 chief engineer Richard Monn said.

The point of the test was to allow viewers time to change their signal if necessary.

Another test will take place in September.
