Get Information On WESH Internships

POSTED: 6:47 p.m. EST March 6, 2002
UPDATED: 11:00 a.m. EST March 7, 2002

The WESH NewsChannel 2 internship program is an unpaid, hands-on experience to learn the operation of a broadcast TV station.

The duties and responsibilities of an intern vary depending upon the nature of his or her interests. Requirements include:
  • Current enrollment in college, university or technical school
  • Documentation stating that the intern will be given credit or recognized as a necessary part of curriculum
  • A demonstrated interest in communications or a related field
Internship opportunities could include working in the following departments:
  • Art Department: Intern will learn to designing graphics and flash animation for station-related projects.
  • Marketing And Promotions: Interns with an interest in marketing, advertising and public relations will be given hands-on experience in these areas through the marketing and promotion department.
  • News Department: Interns can tailor their on-the-job training to specific areas of interest such as news producing (news, sports, health, investigative, special projects, meteorology, online journalism), assignment desk and editing.
  • Technical Operations Department:
    • Engineering: Students will work alongside engineers, getting involved with computer maintenance, preparing audio and video cables, and assisting with maintenance of microwave trucks.
    • Studio Operations: Interns will learn how to work with the technical aspects of a live news broadcast. Some behind the scenes skills will include learning robotic cameras, floor directing, lighting, and show set-ups. You should not have a fear of heights and be willing to lift equipment and work non-traditional hours.
Internship Responsibilities:
No later than your start date, interns must provide WESH-TV with proof of college or technical school sponsorship for the internship. A letter from your professor or advisor indicating the following information is required:
  • Student's name
  • Number of internship hours you must work to satisfy the internship
  • Letter must be on university, college or technical school letterhead and must be signed and dated by the professor or advisor
Once you are accepted as an intern at WESH-TV, you will receive an orientation packet.

Your WESH Advisor will discuss a work schedule in accordance with the number of hours needed to satisfy your internship credits. During the internship, you should always check in with your assigned advisor upon entering the building.

A temporary identification badge will be issued to you with your name and end date of your internship. It is recommended that you carry this badge with you during working hours.

This isn't an electronic door release badge like that issued to station employees. You will have to present the badge at security to enter the parking lot and the building. Please return this badge at the end of your internship.

Secure housing and transportation during the internship are the responsibility of the student. WESH-TV cannot offer support in this area.

Interested candidates should send a letter of interest indicating fulfillment of the requirements, hours, days of availability and preference of department to:
