Work is under way Friday to fix serious damage at Kennedy Space Center's launch pad 39A.

The repairs will cost $2.7 million.

Technicians are working 10-hour shifts for the next two weeks to clear the damage from the pad's flame trench.

It was damaged during the May 31 launch of Discovery.

NASA will then replace the more than 3,000 flame-retardant bricks that were torn out during the launch.

Work is expect to be complete before the next planned launch Oct. 8.
