The landing of the space shuttle Discovery shook up Central Florida with two sonic booms Saturday morning.

The crew performed their de-orbit burn at 10:10 a.m. EDT, crossed the Yucatan Peninsula and flew over Southwest Florida.

Seven astronauts landed safely at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral at 11:15 a.m., following another successful mission to the international space station.

Among the seven, lying in a reclining seat to ease the return of gravity, was space station astronaut Garrett Reisman. Flight surgeons stood by at the runway as the commander, Mark Kelly, eased his 90-ton ship, at 220 mph, onto the concrete.

The 10th flight since the Columbia accident was one of the most trouble-free ever after a few brief problems were solved as quickly as they came up.

The space station, with its new addition delivered by Discovery, is now almost complete when it comes to onboard living space. It now has as much room inside as a 300-passenger 747 jet.

The astronauts looked exhilarated as they walked around their remarkable flying machine – one that's been flying since 1984 and will soon retire.

During the flight, the astronauts not only added the new lab, they also attached its storage room and brought to life its robot arm. The arm will be used to deploy and retrieve experiments from an outside storage platform to be added on a future mission.

The astronauts made three spacewalks in which they helped attach and bring to life the new lab and made inspections of a problem-plagued solar panel.

The machinery, which turns the 240-foot panel to keep it facing the sun, is fouled. The astronauts said they hope to bring back information that will lead to its eventual repair.

The Discovery crew delivered astronaut Greg Chamitoff to the space station.

The Discovery crew delivered about a ton of food, water and other supplies to the station residents, which included a new pump for the station’s only toilet. A repair job undertaken soon after the shuttle docked restored the bathroom to full function.

Reisman stunned a lot of people in the post-landing briefing on Saturday just by showing up. He's the first astronaut to return from the international space station after more than three months and be well enough to talk to reporters just hours after returning from space

“There's a lot of variations between person-to-person,” Reisman said. “We don't know the science yet because we don't have enough data points, but we're working on that. But I think you're right, it’s because I’m short. I'm happy that's finally come in handy for something other than limbo contests.”

Reisman said his wife, Simone, got a new hairstyle since he's been up at the ISS. He said they shared a tender moment when he got to hold her again.

The next launch of the shuttle will be a mission to the Hubble space telescope, currently scheduled for Oct. 8 if NASA can get the shuttle launch pad repaired in time.
