Protesters, Lawsuits: Redo Palm Beach Vote
Americans Wait For Crucial Florida Recount
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Updated 3:46 p.m. EST November 9, 2000 -- A protest was growing outside the Government Center in West Palm Beach midday Thursday in the wake of what many say were confusing ballots.
A federal suit over the Buchanan confusion was abruptly withdrawn Thursday. That suit sought a new election.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson was in West Palm for the rally at the Government Center. The crowd started small Thursday morning, but grew and numbered more than 100 people at midday. Protesters waved signs, chanted and demanded the right to vote again.
Wednesday night, more than 19,000 Palm Beach County ballots were thrown out because they had been double-punched. The votes were considered uncountable.
In the second lawsuit, filed Thursday, Kenneth Horowitz, Sylvia Szymoniak and Catherine Bowser said that they filed a class action complaint in Palm Beach County Circuit Court alleging that improper balloting procedures denied them their right to vote.
The filing follows a similar one Wednesday.
