Save On Electricity And Help Environment, Too

First Step Is To Evaluate Bill

UPDATED: 10:51 am EDT July 2, 2008

Utility bills can add up quickly. Taking the time to evaluate your payment plan and survey your energy use can take the pressure off your wallet.

As an added benefit, cutting your electricity costs nearly always helps the environment, too.

First, contact your utility company. Evaluate your bill and make sure you understand how it's calculated.

Above all, ask lots of questions. Understand the terms of your contract and be cautious about changing it.

Equal payment plans may seem like a great steal, but according to Bankrate.com, they also present some disadvantages. Such plans can hit you with extra charges at the end of the year that significantly raise your annual bill. Because the cost of fuel and natural gas is rising, it's difficult to stay within past years' spending on energy.

Next, consider an energy audit. Bankrate.com reported that most utility companies will do them for free, leaving you to decide which changes to make.

Balance the prices of these items with the money you'll save per month on heating or cooling your home. Also look for tax-deductible items.

Finally, take energy-saving steps in your home. Simple actions, such as turning off any unused lights or electronics, unplugging chargers and power strips from the wall and cleaning your appliances to make them more efficient can save you money.

Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in your home for a bulb that uses less energy and needs to be replaced less often. When buying new appliances, be sure to check their energy efficiency.

By taking these small steps, you will not only potentially save hundreds on your electricity bill, but you will also be helping to preserve the environment.
