Flooding, Weather Slows Some Primary Returns

Tegg, Demings Secure Primary Wins In Orange Co. Sheriff Race

Polls across Central Florida have closed for Florida's primary election.

Voters faced a full slate of federal, county and local candidates, including a high-profile race for Orange County Sheriff.

As results came in Tuesday night, it became apparent that, even days after Tropical Storm Fay has moved away from Central Florida, she is still causing trouble.

Flooding not only kept some voters from showing up at the polls to cast their votes, but also made it difficult for ballots to counted.

Seminole County's Supervisor of Elections, Michael Ertel, said that one polling place was changed due to flooding and those voters in that precinct were bused via Lynx to a new polling place in downtown Sanford.

Three polling places' returns were slow to reach their drop point because of Tuesday night's thunderstorms. The ballots were kept at the polling place until it was safe to travel.

The state's attorney's race in the 7th Judicial District remained too close to call by the late evening with 291 of 318 precincts reporting. R.J. Larizza held a 51 percent lead with 61,264 votes over Independent candidate John Tanner, who had 49 percent, or 58,632 votes, by midnight.

In the anticipated race for Orange County Sheriff, Democratic candidate Jerry Demings, husband of Orlando Police Val Demings, shut out opponent Malone Stewart with 73 percent of the vote.

On the Republican side, John Tegg defeated opponent Bill Armstrong by a similar margin, clinching 77 percent of the vote.

The pair will face off in November for the title.

Republican Gary Borders snagged a place on the November ballot for Lake County Sheriff, while Democrat Gary Young secured a primary win for Brevard County Sheriff.
