TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's attorney general's office said it will start serving four gas companies with subpoenas. That's after residents reported gas stations increasing prices in the wake of Hurricane Ike.The office said it would begin to serve the subpoenas Monday.
The attorney general's office has received more than 4,000 complaints in the last few days about gasoline price gouging after Ike.The office announced it would ask four companies for documentation related to the prices the companies paid for gasoline and the price they sold it at. Those companies were Flying J, Dodge's Gas Stores, Valero and Pilot Travel Centers. The attorney general's office said consumer complaints against these stations have been particularly high in several areas of the state.Attorney General Bill McCollum said there is no shortage of gas in Florida and the subpoenas are intended to make sure gas prices have gone up for stations as well, and they are not just taking advantage of a perceived shortage.A Kangaroo Express in Lake Mary was out of gas Monday afternoon. When a tanker arrived to refill the station with gas, gas prices dropped by 12 cents a gallon. The driver of the tanker said he has had no problem getting gas to deliver.Gov. Charlie Crist is promising to take action against gougers. He said he wants to assure Floridians that companies that are price gouging will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."Consider us as a consumer; we’re spending enough as it is already. We’re feeling the pain. I think we should definitely go after them," gas station customer Al Rowe said.Gas prices near the attractions are higher than in other parts of town. AAA said Florida gets its gas by barge into Tampa Bay. That means Florida shouldn’t see a supply drop like states that get gas from Texas by pipeline.Consumers with price gouging complaints should call 1-866-9SCAM.
