TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush placed Florida under a state of emergency Tuesday and its emergency operations center has been activated.
Flags at the state Capitol in Tallahassee were at half-staff in honor of those who lost their lives in the attacks.
"This is just a preemptive action to ensure that we are prepared for any eventuality," Bush said.
The state Capitol complex was evacuated shortly after 10 a.m..
"Over the loud speaker they told everybody to vacate the building," Capitol visitor, Greg Hedgecock said.
Two bomb threats shut down a state office complex in Orlando and most of the state university system. The commissioner of the department of law enforcement warned that bomb threats would be prosecuted.
"We encourage the public, if you have information, anything at all that seems the least bit out of the ordinary we urge you to call you local law enforcement agency or to contact the Department of Law Enforcement," the Florida Department of Law Enforcement commissioner, Tim Moore, said.
The state Department of Agriculture activated its bio chemical response unit just in case terrorists also unleash germ warfare.
"We have no knowledge of any of that happening but we have to be on a heightened state of alert to react to potential problems," Charles Bronson, agriculture commissioner, said.
The governor vows that state business will be back to normal and the Capitol and universities will be open on Wednesday. He said that is the only way to show terrorists that they have not succeeded.
