NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- With few sharks spotted Thursday, Volusia County beach officials reopened the final half-mile stretch of shoreline south of Ponce Inlet.
The popular surfing area has been closed because of a series of shark bites which left nearly a dozen beachgoers wounded over a two-week period.Beach officials will continue to count sharks by helicopter over the holiday weekend to make sure that the waters are safe. During the closure, dozens of sharks were seen near the coast, beach officials said.
