Brevard Taking Tough Stand On Raves
County Considering Ordinance
Orange County's tough stand against rave clubs is having a ripple effect as Brevard County commissioners consider beefing up restrictions on the all-night clubs.
Brevard County leaders said that they are not happy with the increase in rave clubs in their area, so they are considering an ordinance similar to Orange County's new rules that force nightclubs to shut down at 2 a.m.
Orange County's ordinance was passed two weeks ago. It says that all rave clubs under the county's jurisdiction must close by 2 a.m., must employ three security officers and must have a paramedic on duty at all times.
In Merritt Island, Club DVO, better known as the Lava Club, is a popular after-hours club for young people. Law officers said that the club has become a breeding ground for club drugs like GHB and ecstasy.
After three undercover operations and more than 30 arrests in a month at the Lava Club, Brevard County commissioner Randy O'Brien is calling for a nuisance ordinance that would prohibit clubs from staying open past 2 a.m. and restrict noise and rowdy behavior.
The ordinance would also hold the owners of the clubs more accountable.
"We see the danger coming, and before we start counting bodies, we want to take the appropriate actions immediately." O'Brien said.
The commission will spend the next two weeks building the ordinance and then they will hold public hearings on the issue.
NewsChannel 2 was unable to reach the owner of the Lava Club for comment.
