ORLANDO, Updated 10:49 p.m. EST November 9, 2000 --Those long-distance calling plans tell you that they are saving you a lot of money, but are you really paying what they promise?
Do you know that you could actually be spending 31 cents per minute on a plan that offers 5 cents a minute rates?
It all depends on the monthly fee required and how many calls you make each month.
NewsChannel 2 consumer reporter Michelle Meredith talked to Anne Marsh, an economic analyst with Florida's Public Service Commission about the real cost of long distance service.
Marsh crunched some numbers and discovered that if you were signed up for a plan that is supposed to be 5 cents per minute and you paid a monthly fee of $7.95, your cost per minute could actually be 31 cents a minute if you make an average of 30 minutes of calls a month.

Meredith's report concluded that if you are a heavy user of long distance, these monthly-fee plans are a good deal. But if you don't make many calls, it pays to shop around.
