CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Tiny, hatching sea turtles are rare, protected creatures that depend on Central Florida beaches for nesting grounds.

Volunteers are making rescues, and hoping to save some of them.

The wind is blowing straight in again, as it has for days, and that's just making a bad season worse for threatened sea turtles.

They nest on the beaches, and they're hatching this time of year, but the tropical storms and nor'easters have already destroyed countless nests.

Those turtles that made it through are hatching, and heading out to sea, but it's a 25-mile swim to their feeding grounds, and because of the wind, they're not making it, and people are trying to rescue them.

The Sea Turtle Preservation Society, a volunteer nonprofit organization, is keeping the turtles alive, and waiting for the wind to die down.

They'll take the turtles by boat to their feeding grounds.

Every turtle saved can potentially lay thousands of eggs in its lifetime, to help the species come back.
