Jo Sciortino has been volunteering at Orange County's BETA Center for pregnant teenagers so long that one of the babies she helped care for is now in college. He spoke at a recent graduation ceremony at BETA.Sciortino has been doing, as she said, "a little bit of everything" at the BETA shelter for 20 years. She used to be a donor, then thought she'd volunteer because she liked what the people working there did. They do more than just house pregnant girls. The girls get counseling, schooling, parenting classes, and a loving, supportive environment.
"I just think what they do is wonderful," Sciortino said. "They help girls bring up their self-esteem and have counselors help them with their problems. Everything is positive. I'm not ever discouraged, because I have seen so many successes there. Girls go on to college, get degrees and do well."Sciortino said she never thought she'd be at BETA for two decades but now can't foresee herself leaving any time soon. She said it started out as something to do, but now it's part of her life."People care about each other at BETA. Everybody watches out for everyone," she said. "I refer to them as family. It's a great place."
