Kathleen Lucier is a 7th grader at Cocoa Beach Junior Senior High. Most days, though, she's thinking about the kids at Cambridge Elementary School because about 600 of them are wearing clothes she helped provide.

When Kathleen had to choose a student project, she decided it was a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in her own community. Cambridge Elementary had just mandated school uniforms, but many students couldn't afford them.

Kathleen pooled all of the money she earned from babysitting and doing chores at home and bought shorts for the uniforms. She shopped at thrift stores, sales, and other places to find them for as little as 75 cents a pair.

"I see a lot of them in the uniforms," says Kathleen. "The kids are happy and excited that they have uniforms. I know in my heart that I did something good. I've seen the reaction on their faces when I bring the shorts. They're so happy!"

Brevard County Schools Volunteer Coordinator Lynn Clifton says, "Kathleen is truly an unsung hero who will renew your faith in our young people. She's warm and caring and has made a difference in the lives of many of our students here in Brevard."

When asked why she spends all of her money on kids she doesn't know, Kathleen says, "I think they need clothes more than I need an I-pod or cell phone."

Helping children at school will be a part of the rest of Kathleen's life. She says she'll continue to help buy uniforms for Cambridge Elementary School kids until she graduates. Then, she plans to be a teacher.
