When a hurricane blows through, the power usually goes with it. Many people are turning to generators as a backup, but that can also generate trouble if users are not careful.

Here are six safety tips to help keep you safe and your power on:

1. Don't connect your generator directly into your home's wiring -- don't plug the generator into a household outlet. If you hook the generator to the main power supply, it sends power through the whole house and could send it to unexpected places like your neighbor's house, or even down the line where a repairman might be working.
2. Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Just like your car, a generator emits deadly carbon monoxide. Be sure to put the generator where exhaust fumes can be well-ventilated.
3. Use proper power cords. Make sure they are heavy duty and do not run them under carpets or furniture where heat can build up.
4. Do not store fuel indoors, and do not try to refuel a generator while it's running. Store gas outside in properly labeled, safe containers. Just as you can't refuel your car while it's running, you can't refuel a running generator.
5. Turn off all equipment powered by the generator before shutting down your generator.
6. Read the instructions carefully before the lights go out.

Making sure to follow these tips can help make the aftermath of a hurricane easier and safer to deal with.
