Families Should Prepare Evacuation Plan

Deciding whether to evacuate when a hurricane hits can be a life-or-death decision.

Storm surge is the most deadly of the hurricane hazards, and knowing when and where to evacuate can ensure safety, WESH 2 News reported.

People who live in vulnerable areas, such as mobile homes, barrier islands near the coast, or in areas prone to flooding should evacuate.

Animated maps created by the National Hurricane Center illustrate worst-case scenarios for Florida, such as if a Katrina-sized storm were to hit this peninsula. Click here to view the maps.

Evacuating is important, if necessary. Evacuees should know of a place to go, tell family and friends where they're going, secure the home, and most importantly, leave plenty of time to reach the destination safely. Waiting too long can result in delays due to crowded roads.

Those who don't live in an evacuation zone or vulnerable area should stay home and not evacuate. However, remaining at home does not mean the family is not at risk. Necessary precautions should still be taken, including assembling a disaster-supply kit, securing the home, filling the family car with gasoline, and using a portable radio to follow the storm's progress.

Knowing the difference between evacuation situations is extremely important in the time of a hurricane. Whether living in an area prone to evacuations or not, preparing for the storm is still necessary.
