It's been months since Tropical Storm Fay made its way slowly across Central Florida, dumping massive amounts of rain and causing widespread flooding. The areas hardest hit were parts of Volusia and Brevard counties.Homeowners like Mark Schmidt are still trying to pick up the pieces of their lives and put them back together again.
"It was devastating, we lost everything we own," Schmidt said.Schmidt's house was gutted. All of his furniture has been thrown away and most of the dry wall is down.He said he's applied for FEMA assistance and he said his experience has been a mixed bag."Good in certain aspects. There is help there they have helped us. Now we're looking. There's some talk about a buyout and we're just waiting to see what happens," Schmidt said.Monday is the deadline for anyone to register with FEMA, but so far FEMA said 18,688 people have registered for federal assistance. That's a combo of low interest loans from the Small Business Administration and grants from FEMA.Broken down into counties, it would look like this: Brevard County has 5,242 people registered. Volusia has 1,812, Seminole 1,430 and Orange County has 416.Schmidt said it's just a waiting game.
