BAREFOOT BAY, Fla. -- People living in Florida's largest mobile home park got their first look at a hurricane-proof home on Tuesday.Barefoot Bay has been hit hard by hurricanes, tornadoes and most recently Tropical Storm Fay.Resident Ken Meise took $30,000 in damage from the hurricanes of 2004. He is one of scores of Barefoot Bay residents who came to check out the new place. He loves the idea of an all-concrete manufactured home.
"This is great," he said. The new manufactured home is all concrete, the roof is all one piece and the glass is impact-resistant.The manufacturer said the home is strong enough to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and 200-mph winds. The cost is $90,000 -- less than a lot of manufactured homes in the area.Until now, the Homeowner's Association has never allowed stucco buildings, only siding.Another perk: If the owner wants to leave, the home can be trucked to a new location.
