Pest control can take a pretty big bite out of the wallet, but a new book is offering advice that may save all of us some money.

Dr. Myles Bader is the author of the "21st Century Reference Guide." It says you can often do pest control on your own for practically pennies.

"You can keep the ants, insects and critters away from your property, away from your house, with mostly natural ingredients that you have around the house," Bader said.

Take flies and mosquitoes for example.

"Put some basil in a muslin bag, hang a couple bags around the house, and you'll never see a flying insect again," Bader said.

You can also keep a few basil plants around the house. When it comes to cockroaches, Bader said to hit the liquor cabinet.

"Take a shallow dish, like a saucer, fill it with a cheap wine, and place it anywhere the cockroaches are going to frequent, like under the sink ... They drink the wine, get drunk, fall in, and there they lay with their little legs up in the air," Bader said.

For those who have problems with crawling insects, like ants, grab some bay leaves.

"Put them in all the jars in your kitchen, your cookie jar, your flour container, and you'll never see a crawling insect. They do not like bay leaves," Bader said.

If rodents are a problem, like mice, rats, squirrels or moles, Bader said to take some oil of peppermint on a cotton ball and place it anywhere to solve the problem.
