Wendy's Diary: An Uphill Climb

Editor's Note: NewsChannel 2 anchorwoman Wendy Chioji is grateful to all of the viewers who have expressed their best wishes as she prepares for the Tour of Hope.

Chioji has chosen to use WESH.com as her way of keeping the public updated on her journey. New diary entries will be posted daily after the race begins.

I am resting in a hotel room in Payson, Ariz. We're heading out for our third stage (Stage 10 of the tour) in about 45 minutes. We've been in the hotel for about three hours. We arrived in the rock-star tour bus Saturday night.

The tour bus is great. We each have little bunks where we can sleep, and there's food on the bus, etc. The first time we were on it, we watched TV and wrote e-mail and chatted. Now, we head for food and bunk.

We had our first night ride Saturday night, through Salome, Ariz. Coach Ivana is now breaking us up into little teams among our team of six. So, at around midnight, Bart and Nat started out. Patrick and I joined in at Mile 30, and Beth and Eric joined in at Mile 40.

We kept a decent average pace of about 22 mph, which was good because it was a gentle incline the whole way. We finished riding sometime between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

We will launch ourselves on one of our hardest stages Sunday. It's about 7,000 feet of climbing at altitude. I think we're all a little anxious, but excited to get this stage behind us because we know the next stage is mostly downhill near the Very Large Array in New Mexico.

We're still all feeling good and strong. Sunday, at least, we're rested!
