CELEBRATION, Fla. -- Smoking is now banned on 15 hospital campuses in Central Florida. The hospitals run by Florida Hospital, Orlando Health, Health Central and Central Florida Regional have made a “Breathe Easy” commitment to encourage people to quit smoking. The ban was enacted on Tuesday.Hospital employee Jessica Keysor decided to use a quit-smoking class and medication – both provided by the hospital – to help her quit.
"I never thought I was going to do it. My friends cannot believe that I don't smoke. In fact I don't believe it either, but it's awesome," Keysor said. The smoking ban does not just apply to people who work inside the hospital’s main facilities. It is also in effect for visitors and construction workers on the properties.Visitor Jose Negron said he does not mind having to put out his cigarette on the hospital’s campus."You have to respect somebody who doesn’t smoke and who can’t be around that, so that’s a good policy for them to have," Negron said.Hospital administrators said it is important to ensure worker and patient health."It’s to create a healthy and a safe environment," said Senior Vice President of Florida Hospital, Dick Tibbits.Smoking is also banned in cars."We’re not running around and finding people to make this a problem," Tibbits, said. "There will be no smoking police. We’re not chasing it, but we will enforce it."Keysor said she hopes the ban will encourage others to quit smoking; a habit that costs the health care system $150 billion every year.Four hospitals in Lake County have already made their campuses smoke-free and hospitals in Brevard County will implement the ban this fall. Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee expects to be smoke-free by January.
