At least one sea turtle nest was robbed of dozens of loggerhead sea turtle eggs overnight in Flagler Beach.

Eggs were poached from one nest and two others were vandalized and possibly robbed.

"This turtle nest [was] violated by someone. It's been dug in. We've lost 106 eggs," Turtle Patrol Volunteer Rosa Panos said.

Indentations from a pull-along cooler possibly used to carry the stolen eggs were seen at the site of the nest.

"These were one week old, so the nest right beside them is due to hatch any day so they would have had either hatchlings or pretty freshly laid eggs," Panos said.

Volunteers said turtle eggs are a delicacy in some cultures.

Sea turtles and their nests are both state and federally protected. Violators could face high fines, up to thousands of dollars and the possibility of jail time.

"I've been on patrol for three years here and I've never seen the nests violated like this or poached since I've been doing it. It's very sad," Panos said.
