Many gardeners are so focused on adding color to the landscape that they forget about fragrance.

During certain times of the year, it's nice to have fragrance blow through open windows of a house, or good scents can make a pool experience that much more enjoyable.

WESH 2's Garden Rebel Robert Vincent Sims said few plants provide better fragrance than gardenias.

Sims said the single dwarf gardenia will bloom late in the summer. He said they will be covered with blooms, but they will be the single-flower type.

He said dwarf gardenias have the same silky white flowers, but they are a bit rounder. He said they almost look like periwinkle flowers.

Sims said gardeners should use that particular variety the same way they'd use ilex shillings or an India hawthorne. He suggested planting them in groupings of odd numbers, such as three, five or seven.

Other uses could include each side of a home's entrance or to border a patio. Sims said they will grow in full sun or even partial shade.

Gardenias need an acid-loving fertilizer, which is a specialty fertilizer that can be purchased at nurseries.
