Many of Central Florida's theme parks have incorporated yellow ginger into the landscapes.

Sometimes it's called variegated ginger, reported WESH 2's Garden Rebel Robert Vincent Sims.

He said there are many species of ginger and they all grow in tropical rainforests.

They're interesting plants because their stocks actually hold a lot of moisture, which means they absorb a lot of moisture, Sims said.

Therefore, the ginger would be a great plant for anyone who has a spot that's kind of shady, such as under a tree, or perhaps that has an area of the yard where a lot of water sits or that stays moist after a rain. Sims said the plant would thrive under those conditions.

Even if the area is not super wet, if you have a sprinkler system, that would be perfectly fine for it, too.

Sims said he noticed in some landscaping that people are taking these plants and sticking them out in the full sun because they want the yellow color to brighten things up.

He said the heat from the sun in the early-afternoon hours is not great for this plant and you'll get a lot of brown edges. It's better in a little bit of shade.

The gingers can get quite big, Sims said.

The best way to fertilize them is to fill your hose-end sprayer with 20/20/20, add water according to the directions, hook the hose up and just spray the foliage.
