The East Palatka holly, one of Florida's prettiest native plants, looks great in any yard.

It comes from the East Palatka area of Florida, where they'll often be found along swampy areas along the side of the road, reported WESH 2's Garden Rebel Robert Vincent Sims.

It's quite pretty in the wintertime because the berries will turn bright orange and become food for a lot of wildlife, particularly birds, Sims said.

The East Palatka holly also happens to be one of the most popular landscape plants. Sims Landscaping often plants them in customers' side yards to block a neighbor's open garage or boat that's on the side.

The plant can get very wide. Sometimes it can be used in a grouping of three or five, usually an odd number, in the lawn to give it a interesting look because the plants trim up very nicely and create a conical shape, he said.

Sometimes the plants develop little open areas, and it takes time to fill that in. Sims said regular trimming, fertilizing and generally keeping it in good health can help fill it in.
