Foo Fighters Say No 'Hero' For McCain

Band Says Song Being 'Tarnished'

UPDATED: 9:50 am EDT October 9, 2008

The Foo Fighters don't want Republican Sen. John McCain using their song "My Hero."

Survey: Stop Playing Songs?

The band has asked McCain to stop using the song in his campaign for president.

A statement said the saddest part is that the song "was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential." It also said the song is being "tarnished" because it's being "used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric."

The band, which uses its Web site to encourage fans to register and vote, also supports MTV's "Rock The Vote" campaign.

McCain's campaign did not immediately return calls for comment.

John Mellencamp, Heart and Jackson Browne have objected to the McCain campaign using their songs. Browne and Mellencamp in particular are known for their support of liberal causes. And Browne campaigned during the Democratic primaries for former Sen. John Edwards.

Bruce Springsteen, also an active campaigner for Democrats, made waves as far back as the 1980s, when he asked Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign to cease playing "Born in the USA" at rallies.

Sam Moore of Sam and Dave has objected to Democrat Sen. Barack Obama's campaign using "Soul Man."
