Professor Wrestling: 'Night Of Champions' Results

POSTED: 10:01 pm EDT June 26, 2008
UPDATED: 11:00 pm EDT June 29, 2008

Listen up!

Class is in session.

It was a "Night Of Champions" for World Wrestling Entertainment, which meant every match at Sunday's PPV was for a bit of gold. Who stood victorious? Kofi Kingston was one winner. He took the Interncontinental strap off of Chris Jericho in an unscheduled match after Shawn Michaels interfered. Aren't you glad I'm here for all the results? You bet you are. As for the rest of the card, read on!

Podcast: 'Old School, New School' -- Episode 80

WWE Tag Team Championship Match: The Miz and John Morrison (c) vs. Finlay and Hornswoggle
What Should Happen: I'm guessing Vince McMahon wants to put gold on Hornswoggle just to say he did. He doesn't take the tag division seriously -- that's why he made this match. It's too bad, because he employs a lot of talented tag wrestlers.

What Will Happen: Finlay and Hornswoggle will be victorious. It's almost a lock. Almost.

What Did Happen: Morrison and Miz retained. McMahon didn't flip his tag wig after all.

World Tag Team Championship Match: Bob Holly and Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Ted DiBiase and ??
What Should Happen: The mystery over who will be DiBiase's partner doesn't bode well for Holly and Rhodes retaining. In these cases, the underdogs win -- especially if the other team has been bickering the past few weeks. That's OK here, especially if WWE is going to push DiBiase.

What Will Happen: DiBiase and company will take this strap.

What Did Happen; On Friday afternoon, I answered an e-mail saying that Rhodes would turn on Holly and he and DiBiase would form a heel tag team. That's exactly what happened. DiBiase and Rhodes won, and are the new champs.

WWE Women's Championship Match: Mickie James (c) vs. Katie Lea Burchill
What Should Happen: WWE's women's division has gotten slightly more competitive in recent months. Which means this match shouldn't be too terrible. What should happen? As usual, it doesn't matter. I'd have to interested for it to matter.

What Will Happen: James will keep her title.

What Did Happen: James pinned Burchill to retain her crown.

U.S. Championship Match: Matt Hardy (c) vs. Chavo Guerrero
What Should Happen: Both performers will be battling it out on ECW, so I'm guessing the smart move is to give it to Chavo, the heel. This might be the start of a good series of matches between these two.

What Will Happen: I'm picking Chavo for the upset.

What Did Happen: Chavo almost pulled it off, but Hardy ultimately prevailed, keeping his belt.

ECW Championship Match: Kane (c) vs. Big Show vs. Mark Henry
What Should Happen: Since Mark Henry is the only one of the three that will be performing on ECW, I'd book him as the winner here. It only makes sense. But then again, the ECW title isn't exactly on any type of pedestal -- so anything could happen to further cheapen it.

What Will Happen: Mark Henry will win the match and the ECW strap.

What Did Happen: Mark Henry took it. He's your ECW champ.

WWE Championship: Triple H (c) vs. John Cena
What Should Happen: Helmsley is going to "Smackdown," and there's no way he'll go there empty-handed. Too bad Cena.

What Will Happen: Triple H retains.

What Did Happen: Trips pinned Cena for the title.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Edge (c) vs. Batista
What Should Happen: Batista has been drafted to "Raw." Edge stays on "Smackdown" -- with Triple H arriving. That smells like Edge will drop the belt here. That also allows Shawn Michaels to challenge Batista for the tile on "Raw."

What Will Happen: Batista grabs the title, and headlines "Raw" as champ. Edge then battles Triple H for the WWE title on "Smackdown."

What Did Happen: With some help from Vickie Guerrero and special referee Chavo Guerrero, Edge retained his title -- pinning Batista. Right now, "Raw" has no heavyweight champion!

That's it. For the record, I called four matches correctly with just three slight misses. Not the most amazing night I've ever had, but amazing enough.
