Professor Wrestling: 'SummerSlam' Results

Cena, Khali Risk Gold

Listen up!

Class is in session.

It's a sign that summer is almost over, kids: "SummerSlam" is history. On tap Sunday night: two big title tilts and the return of Hunter Hearst Helmsley as he took on Booker T. for the right to be called King. What happened? That's why I'm here.

Challenge Match: Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero
What Should Happen: It's also the return of Mr. Mysterio. When Rey gets through with Chavo, he's going to beat The Great Khali for the title in a true David vs. Goliath spectacle. Count on it.

What Will Happen: It's Rey's first night back after being out with a legit injury. There's no way he'll lose.

What Did Happen: Rey got the win, pinning Chavo after a 619.

Divas Battle Royal
What Should Happen: The winner gets to face Candice Michelle for the WWE women's title. Who should be the last one standing? Eeny, meenie, miney, moe …

What Will Happen: … toss a gal to the front row. If she hollers, way to go! Who will be the very best one? Victoria.

What Did Happen: Beth Phoenix rose to the occassion to win.

Challenge Match: Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Booker T
What Should Happen: It's the return of Triple H, as Vince McMahon's son-in-law locks up with King Booker. I have a hard time thinking the next co-owner of the company will drop this one.

What Will Happen: This is a bet-the-mortgage match. You could win big by picking Triple H.

What Did Happen: Hunter got the clean pin over Booker. I hope you didn't forget to place the bet.

Intercontinental Title Match: Umaga (c) vs. Carlito vs. Mr. Kennedy
What Should Happen: I believe that one of these three will be revealed as the illegitimate son of Vince McMahon. That would be Mr. Kennedy, kids. As for the match, it makes the most sense for Carlito to carry around some gold. A weasel without a belt is a weasel no one really cares about. WWE has spent too much time developing Carlito to have him languish in ring limbo.

What Will Happen: Carlito will cheat to win.

What Did Happen: Umaga prevailed, to keep his belt.

ECW Championship Match: John Morrison (c) vs. C.M. Punk
What Should Happen: Conventional wisdom has Punk taking the title from Morrison. I don't see it. I see a few more months of the babyface Punk chasing the heel champ. This is a good program -- I'd keep it going with a Morrison victory.

What Will Happen: Morrison will shut the door on Punk.

What Did Happen: Morrison pinned Punk (with the help of the ropes) to retain the ECW belt.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: The Great Khali (c) vs. Batista
What Should Happen: Let's get it over with. Have Batista lose and sign the match everyone wants to see as long as this oaf is going to wear the belt: Mysterio vs. Khali.

What Will Happen: Khali will win by his new killer move, his Vice Grip. Rey is on the horizon.

What Did Happen: Khali was disqualified after bashing Batista with a chair. Title does not change hands. Brutal match.

WWE Title Match: John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton
What Should Happen: Yeah, Orton deserves to be in the main event, and it might be time to pull the trigger and let him actually carry the belt. I have to be honest, it would be nice to see Cena chase a heel again.

What Will Happen: I've predicted Cena's demise on more than one occasion. This time it'll happen. Orton wins.

What Did Happen: WWE missed another opportunity to move forward. Cena pinned Orton cleanly to retain his belt.

And that was "SummerSlam," the second-biggest show of WWE's pay-per-view roster. For the record, I had four right (I'm taking the Khali match because the title didn't change, which is a win for the champ in my book), and three wrong. Once again, a stellar night in prediction-ville. Let me pat myself on the back.

Before the bell rings, don't forget to DOWNLOAD Episode 43 of "Old School, New School," the Professor Wrestling podcast. This week, my co-hosts Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire go thumbs up or thumbs down on Vince McMahon's paternity troubles. We also tackle the best referees of all time, and explain what "working stiff" means. As usual, you'd be a dunce to miss it.

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
